Let me update readers to the latest changes to the site.
- I continue to publish the monthly newsletter for my local gun club, but the past several months have been difficult to fill it with much in the way of worthwhile information for members. There are a lot of recurring items that are important each month, and I try to move them around a bit for variety. As far as “real” news of note for members, there is none to speak of, making it a bit difficult to put out what I consider a newsletter worth reading.
- “Back in the day,” I was able to produce a newsletter that also included a lot of updated political news around the Second Amendment, along with news from the National Rifle Association (NRA), National Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF), and similar organizations. Magazines I read, items in my daily email, and other firearm-related items also gave me plenty to publish.
- My Board of Directors put the kibosh on all that many months ago, claiming we were putting our 501-c(7) non-profit status in jeopardy. About the same time, they made the decision to remove the newsletter from the public side of the website, which I had handed off, for much the same reasons. The site has yet to have a members’ page, so it has to be delivered in email or snail mail. You just have to look at the newsletters on this site, add in a little gun club information, and you get a sense of what members were receiving.
- When we re-examined our club’s tax status, we found that political activity is NOT one of the criteria for non-profit status, as it is with many other 501-c categories. It dealt mostly with financial benefits to members and officers not being allowable. I decided to find a way I could provide information I thought was important to club members and, at the same time, continue to put out a worthwhile project. This is where the major changes came into play.
- I had originally called my emails to members Potshots, and promised there wouldn’t be any junk in members’ email boxes. Over time, I received more and more requests to “send out a Potshots” for one reason or another, to the point where I had to finally put an end to the name. I have resurrected it now for one purpose, and one purpose only.
- I will continue to publish the monthly newsletter, but I am also publishing a weekly digest of firearm-related news I feel is important to anyone who is a serious shooter and Second Amendment advocate. Being aware of what is happening in the anti-gun community, what the pro-gun groups are doing to counteract attacks on the sport, firearm safety recalls, upcoming gun shows in the area, and a wide variety of other news are now the focus of the weekly Potshots.
- Since it’s obvious I can’t keep up with a blog in a timely manner, I will do it through the publishing of my weekly Potshots, and maybe some special pieces on an infrequent basis, instead. I have published a total of 27 issues so far, and will include links to them, along with weekly updates, on this blog page.
