As the whole issue of gun control has progressed over time, seemingly going nowhere quickly, anti-gun groups have begun to “change” the language in the hopes of finding something to aid their cause and stick in peoples’ minds. Guns Magazine called it “camo-speak, a phrase coined to describe the hijacking of gun control language to make it more palatable to the uninformed masses.”
Because most people get their news from the mainstream media – NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC – and other media or publications that tend to lean liberal, camo-speak is about the only thing they hear. You probably are a Conservative, a shooter, a Second Amendment follower, or someone who follows more Conservative media sources to hear otherwise.
A few examples – “gun control” is now “gun law reform;” Moms Demand Action is a “gun safety organization;” and “red flag laws” are “extra-judicial gun seizures.” One of the most common is “common sense” gun legislation. Who can argue with “common sense?”
Our greatest fear as fans of all things shooting is that those “masses” discussed earlier, including a lot of young people, are believing what they’re reading and hearing. We are slowly losing the battle, and each new shooting somewhere in the U.S. (or even the world) brings a new awareness of what guns CAN do in the wrong hands, not necessarily what they WILL do in law-abiding ones.
This is our charge – bring family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and others to our side of the discussion and show them the truth about firearms when used legally. National Shooting Sports Federation (NSSF) will celebrate August as National Shooting Sports Month. This might be a good time to take someone to the range with you and help them find out what shooting actually is all about. Good luck!
